Scientist/Senior Scientist - Target ID, Genomics

COMPENSATION: Competitive with share options available

LOCATION: The Schrodinger Building, Oxford Science Park, Oxford

HOURS: Full-time

CONTRACT TYPE: Permanent

NUCLEOME THERAPEUTICS, a fast-emerging biopharma that is building a passionate, creative, and dedicated multi-disciplinary team of scientists with expertise in gene regulation, genomics, machine learning, drug discovery, data analysis and software development, whose mission is to decode and mine the regulatory “dark matter” of the human genome to transform drug target discovery and deliver first-in-class precision medicine for autoimmune diseases. We are building a rewarding and fun environment where people embrace creative ways of thinking, take smart risks, and feel empowered to make a difference.

The Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative Senior Scientist with expertise in leveraging cutting-edge genomics data to identify new ways to treat human diseases, a self-starter, who would thrive in the dynamic environment of a growing biotechnology company. The successful candidate will be leveraging combination of cutting-edge genomics and genetic data to identify novel therapeutic targets, map disease affected pathways and generate other novel insights with value for drug discovery and development. The initial focus will be on lymphocytes and autoimmune diseases. Relevant disease biology experience and an understanding of key genetic and gene regulation principles would thus be an advantage, as would experience in data science and working with large genomics datasets. The role will require a high-degree of cross-disciplinary collaboration with our drug-discovery and computational teams, and an ability to communicate complex ideas across disciplines. You would also be required to maintain an up-to-date knowledge of key developments within core diseases of interest and may contribute to lab-based target discovery or validation projects, with focus on performing genomics assays, as needed (training will be provided). Working in a rapidly growing company, you’ll need a flexible mindset, with the ability to continually adapt to new challenges. You will have an integral role in the venture, take ownership of the work and demonstrate an exceptional work ethic towards discovering breakthrough medicines that will improve patients’ lives.

What we are looking for

Essential Experience/Skills
  • PhD in biological discipline, or MSc and demonstrable experience in a relevant filed
  • Demonstrable experience of leveraging genomics and genetic data to identifying novel drug targets and/or map pathways with focus on genetic variation within the non-coding genome
  • Strong background in disease biology and ideally knowledge of autoimmune or other immunology-based diseases
  • Experience in analysing large NGS datasets and common approaches to extract insights, including data visualization
  • Ability to design and run research projects, interpret data, troubleshoot, and suggest next steps and identify alternative approaches
  • Ability to work independently as well as thrive working in a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong communication skills and ability to communicate complex ideas to specialists and non-specialists
  • Flexible and co-operative approach to colleagues
  • Ability to develop and improve new skills and knowledge necessary to successfully support assigned projects
  • Strong organisational and time management skills; ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, as well as ability to prioritise and balance competing demands
  • Ability to deliver high-quality, consistent results in a timely fashion
  • A positive “can-do” and result oriented attitude, with openness to new ideas and ability to work flexibly in a highly dynamics environment
Preferred experience
  • Coding experience e.g., in R or python
  • Demonstrable understanding of the principles of early target identification and drug discovery
  • Knowledge of key statistical principles within population genomics
  • Understanding of gene regulation
  • Experience of performing NGS techniques e.g., RNA-seq, ATAC-seq or 3D genome technologies.
