Team Lead Bioinformatician
NUCLEOME THERAPEUTICS, a fast-emerging biopharma that is building a passionate, creative, and dedicated multi-disciplinary team of scientists with expertise in gene regulation, genomics, machine learning, drug discovery, data analysis and software development, whose mission is to decode and mine the regulatory “dark matter” of the human genome to transform drug target discovery and deliver first–in–class precision medicine for autoimmune diseases. The Role
We are seeking a hands-on TEAM LEAD BIOINFORMATICIAN who is a self-starter, proactive and who would thrive in the dynamic environment of a fast-emerging biopharma company. The role will be focused on team leadership and people management of a team of bioinformaticians with a substantial opportunity to perform hands-on bioinformatics and to lead projects. You will use your extensive skills in leadership and bioinformatics to lead and develop a high-performing team of bioinformaticians, managing all aspects of their performance management, objective setting, recruitment, and career development. You will facilitate the environment and the tools of success to collect, integrate, mine, and visualise complex biological data, and to apply and refine existing methods as well as develop and professionally package novel ones to identify and decode the sequences in our genomes that underlie human disease and guide therapeutic development. The team will provide matrix team support to deliver projects ranging from target identification and validation to drug discovery. Therefore, the bioinformatics team members will work closely with other teams at Nucleome including genomics and drug discovery scientists. You will follow and advocate for the best practices in method implementation ensuring reusability and reproducibility. Through your leadership, you will embed and promote Nucleome’s values.
In addition to team leadership, the role will involve a substantial amount of hands-on bioinformatics, computational solution designing, and project technical leadership. You will help elevating the collective skillset in the team across your direct reports, other colleagues in Computational Biology, and colleagues in other teams. You will be dynamic with the ability to adjust and respond to circumstances while balancing quality and efficiency. You will also have an integral role in the venture and take ownership of the work.
What we are looking for
Key skills & experience
- Any of:
- PhD in bioinformatics, genomics, computer science or a related discipline;
- PhD in life sciences related disciplines and demonstrable experience in developing and applying computational methods to genome data analysis
- Candidates with demonstrable extensive experience in the fields above.
- Demonstrable line-management / team leadership experience.
- Proven bioinformatics experience within an industrial biopharmaceutical setting
- Demonstrable experience in designing fit-for-purpose custom solutions for bioinformatic problems
- Demonstrable experience working with genomics / NGS datasets
- Demonstrable experience working with a broad range of statistical and visualisation methods to select, organise, integrate, and analyse biological data
- Knowledge of and experience with common bioinformatics databases, resources and tools
- Programming skills:
- Good programming skills in Python (essential) and preferably in bash, R and/or Perl.
- Experience with data visualisation
- Comfortable in using Linux systems
- Ability to modularise (package) and document code pipelines to be reused by others.
- Knowledge of code version control (using git) and collaborative coding
- Extensive experience in managing teams, personal development, and performance management
- Experience in an industry setting
- Strong organisational skills to track data and record downstream analysis
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team
- Strong communication skills and ability to communicate complex ideas to technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience supporting and collaborating with non-computational biologists
- Flexible and co-operative approach to colleagues
- Strong organisational and time management skills; as well as the ability to prioritise and balance competing demands
- A positive “can-do” and result oriented attitude, with openness to new ideas and the ability to work flexibly in a highly dynamic environment
Preferred skills & experience
- Direct experience in early-stage drug target discovery and validation
- Track record of working with multiple genomics data, such as RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, DNase-seq, ATAC-seq, and/or 3C based assays
- Track record of working with single cell genomics data
- Experience in constructing novel bioinformatics pipelines
- Knowledge of and experience with statistical analysis, theoretically and practically
- Knowledge of and experience with machine learning, classical and/or deep-learning methods
- Knowledge of and experience with using and/or administration of cloud computing resources, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), for bioinformatics
- Knowledge and/or strong interest in transcriptional regulation
- Knowledge and/or strong interest in drug and drug target discovery
- Demonstrated experience in collecting, mining and visualising complex biological data
- Experience in development of NGS analysis pipelines for large numbers of samples
- Experience in the pharmaceutical and/or biotech industry
- Experience in a start-up setting
